Ga Mashie springs to life with Homowo festival’s kpokpoi ritual

The Ga Mashie Homowo festival began on Saturday, August 10, with the traditional Kpokpoi sprinkling ceremony, led by the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II carried out the ritual by sprinkling Kpokpoi at 21 houses representing the Ga stool, accompanied by lively drumming, dancing, and the firing of muskets.

As tradition dictates, the festival’s activities started with the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, who serves as the Adobten (Head of Military) of the Ga State.

He commenced the Kpokpoi sprinkling at his palace, then moved through the main streets of Ga Mashie to Usher Fort.

The event attracted a large crowd, including tourists and members of the diaspora who had come to take part in the festivities.

Homowo, meaning “hooting at hunger,” celebrates a time in Ga history when the people endured and overcame a severe famine.
