The president of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Professor Eric Abavare, has clarified that the recent suspension of the nationwide strike was solely decided by the leadership of Organised Labour.
Prof. Abavare emphasized that this decision does not represent the sentiments of other affiliated organizations within the union.
On Thursday, a government official revealed that organized labor arrived at a Wednesday meeting prepared to strike. They brought a pre-written speech, indicating their intention to proceed with the strike despite the meeting’s intended purpose of reaching a final decision. However, the strike was ultimately called off after the government agreed to address some of labor’s concerns. This included accelerating the “Operational Halt” initiative, spearheaded by the Ghanaian military, to combat illegal mining within protected forest areas.
