Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, has called for the arrest of three individuals whom he holds responsible for the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, March 31, Gbande demanded the immediate arrest of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Board Chairman of ECG; Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Energy Minister; and Samuel Dubik Mahama, former CEO of ECG.
This controversy has sparked nationwide concern, as the missing containers were meant to provide essential electrical equipment and materials for ECG’s operations but mysteriously disappeared under unclear circumstances.
Investigations have revealed procurement irregularities and questionable financial transactions within ECG, shedding light on the improper management of these shipments. Reports also suggest that certain government officials and ECG executives were aware of the mishandling of the containers but failed to intervene.
Expressing his strong stance on the matter, Mustapha Gbande emphasized the need to hold the implicated individuals accountable.
“The Board Chairman, Afenyo-Markin, now wants to run away from responsibility, and it is in the interest of the country for him to be arrested immediately,” he stated.
He further insisted, “I am calling for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Mahama, and Matthew Opoku Prempeh because we cannot continue to have these instances of corruption, and it is time for us to take action.”
