The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is currently experiencing internal conflict, as two opposing factions have sent conflicting letters to the Electoral Commission (EC) concerning the party’s participation in the December 7 general elections.
In one letter, the GFP General Secretary, George Afful, officially informed the EC of the party’s decision to endorse Philip Kwabena Agyemang, also known as Roman Fada, as their presidential candidate.
“I hereby write to inform the Commission that the party has duly nominated Mr. Philip Appiah Kubi to replace our late Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections.
“His name is hereby submitted to the Commission in line with your request in the letter under reference,” the statement read.
The letter added that the nomination of the new presidential candidate would be filed by the party within the required time frame, in accordance with the law.
The decision comes after the unexpected passing of the party’s founder and previous flagbearer, Akua Donkor. It follows the EC’s directive, which instructed the GFP to nominate a new presidential candidate within 10 days, as outlined in Article 40(4) of the 1992 Constitution.
However, a separate letter from the party’s National Organiser, Richard Botchway, stated that, following consultations with Akua Donkor’s family, the GFP had chosen to withdraw from the presidential race entirely.
“We are by this letter formally informing the Commission of our intention not to participate in the elections.
“Any inconveniences this decision may have caused the Commission and its calendar for the December 7 elections is deeply regretted,” the statement read.
The letter further mentioned that the GFP would be ready to take part in any future elections organized by the Electoral Commission.
This internal disagreement now poses serious implications for the GFP’s potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
