The Palancas Negras of Angola clinched a narrow 1-0 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana on Thursday evening in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Group F clash took place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

In the first half, Angola adopted a defensive approach, absorbing pressure from the Black Stars, who struggled to find their rhythm on the pitch. The poor playing surface made it difficult for Otto Addo’s side to fully showcase their abilities, much to the disappointment of the home fans.

Despite their efforts, the Black Stars were unable to break the deadlock in the first half. After the break, the team returned with renewed determination to get on the scoresheet.

Mohammed Kudus, 23, had an impressive start to the second half, attempting a long-range shot in the 57th minute, only to be denied by an excellent save from Angola’s goalkeeper.

Later in the 75th minute, Jordan Ayew had a promising chance when he was played through on goal, but his shot was blocked by a quick-reacting Angola defender, keeping the game goalless as the clock ticked down.

In a final push for a goal, Ghana coach Otto Addo brought on Majeed Ashimeru and Joseph Paintsil, hoping to boost the team’s attacking force. However, despite increased pressure in the closing moments, the Black Stars were unable to find the back of the net.

In the dying moments of the game, Angola capitalized on their one clear opportunity when Felício Mendes João Milson netted a late winner, sealing a hard-earned 1-0 victory for the Palancas Negras.
