The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially approved 13 candidates to contest in the 2024 presidential elections after a thorough vetting process.
The list includes familiar faces from the country’s major political parties and a number of independents hoping to challenge the established political order.
Notably, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have both secured their spots, as they prepare to woo voters with promises of economic reforms, infrastructure improvements, and enhanced social services.
Their inclusion has set the stage for what is expected to be a high-stakes contest.
In contrast, Bernard Mornah, a prominent figure from the People’s National Convention (PNC), was disqualified. Mornah had campaigned to end the long-standing duopoly of NPP and NDC leadership but failed to meet the EC’s criteria. His disqualification has raised eyebrows, given his public confidence in disrupting the political landscape.
The EC emphasized that the selection process was conducted with transparency and fairness.
Candidates were required to submit financial records, proof of citizenship, and properly completed nomination forms. The rigorous vetting process ensured compliance with legal requirements.
A statement from the EC on Friday, September 20, urged the candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns and follow the country’s electoral guidelines.
“With the successful filing of nominations between September 9 and 13, 2024, the Commission conducted a thorough examination of the nomination forms to ensure conformity with the law,” the statement read.
