All National Identification Card (Ghana Card) numbers will become Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) starting April 1, 2021.

This was disclosed by President Akufo-Addo as he reiterates his government’s commitment to formalising Ghana’s economy.

From 1st April, and this is not April Fool’s prank, all National ID numberd will become Tax Identification Numbers”, the President said. “In so doing, the number of people registered will increase from the current three million (3 million) to 15.5 million.”

He noted that the country has, after four years, witnessed progress in all areas in the formalisation of the country’s economy.

Delivering the 2021 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Tuesday, March 9, the President said the country’s quest to formalise the economy has been unprecedented.

He said for instance, that at the end of 2017, only 715,000 Ghanaians had tax numbers, saying “the increase to 15.5 million is simply phenomenal”.
