Ghanaian music bitter rivals Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy have reached a truce after a gun-toting battle at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).
And it was not just for the optics. They said they meant it and have committed the rare ceasefire to “divinity.”
“It is only human, we are not perfect, and as humans we will keep trying to get to the top and for the peace between us to last. Peace is key in everything.
“The length of this unity is not dependent on us, we leave it to divine. And we beg you the media not to pitch us against each other,” Stonebwoy said when the two met the media on Tuesday to announce a peace concert dubbed ‘Ghana First.’
Details of the concert will be announced in the coming weeks.
Shatta Wale sealed the peace accord with a rare kiss on the cheek of his rival Stonebwoy before the cameras. He said “this is a Jesus kiss” sending the audience into wild laughter.
They called on their fans to respect the truce and let peace prevail within the industry.
Indefinite ban
Organiser of the award Charterhouse has banned Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy from the VGMA indefinitely. The two warring dancehall artistes have also been stripped of all awards they won.
They have also been granted bail in the sum of GHC50, 000 each for the chaos that marred the 20th VGMA.
The court also cautioned them to be of “good behavior during the pendency of the case” before it, a statement from the police said.
They have both been charged with offensive conduct while Stonebwoy has an additional charge for displaying weapon in a public place without permission.
The two dancehall artistes pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case has been adjourned to June 20, 2019.
Background
Chaos erupted at the 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards when Shatta Wale and his squad attacked his arch-rival Stonebwoy on stage when the latter was announced as the ‘Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year’.
It was a free-for-all fight on the big stage as the two sides clashed forcing Stonebwoy to pull a pistol.
There was total pandemonium at the event as security struggled to restore order forcing the show to halt for over half an hour.
This is the fifth consecutive time Stonebwoy is beating Shatta Wale to the award.
Top celebrities were spotted outside the Accra International Conference Center, where the event was held as they ‘flee’ for safety.
