Road construction and other essential administrative projects across Ghana are expected to encounter significant delays as workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) begin an indefinite strike on Tuesday, November 12.
The strike is in protest of the government’s decision to move forward with the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118), a measure that has sparked considerable controversy within the sector.
Central to the workers’ grievances is a demand for the removal of two top officials: Ing. I.K. Mensah, Chairman of the GHA Board, and Ing. Collins B. Donkor, CEO of the National Roads Authority (NRA). Workers accuse both officials of enabling decisions they believe undermine the stability and integrity of Ghana’s road sector.
The strike action follows an earlier petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in which GHA workers requested further consultations on the new Act before its implementation. The employees argue that their concerns about the law’s impact on road infrastructure projects have been largely ignored, pushing them to take this latest course of action.
