The Ghana Online Drivers Union (GODU) is threatening a nationwide strike if the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) does not engage in discussions regarding the recently introduced Vehicle Income Tax (VIT) for ride-hailing drivers.

The GRA’s decision, effective January 1, 2024, has sparked GODU’s outrage, citing a lack of stakeholder consultation and unclear legislative regulations for ride-hailing.

The union urges the GRA to postpone VIT implementation and collaborate on a fair tax system. If unaddressed, GODU warns of a nationwide strike or potential cost increases for passengers.

Strong defence

But the GRA is fighting back. The Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah says placing the Vehicle Income Tax (VIT) on owners of ride hailing vehicles is part of measures to expand the tax net.

“It’s important that we deepen and widen the tax net, and if there are businesses and industries not captured, everything must be done to bring them on board”, he said.

Dr. Owusu-Amoah noted that the GRA has being implementing new strategies to help bring on board businesses that have moved into the E-Commence space onto the tax bracket.
