Asante Kotoko were held to a 1-1 draw by Bechem United at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon, a result that saw them lose their sole grip at the top of the Ghana Premier League table. The draw allowed Bibiani GoldStars to catch up, leaving both sides level on points in the title race.

Heading into the match with a slender lead at the summit, Kotoko were tipped to claim all three points in front of their home fans. But Bechem United arrived with a clear game plan and executed it impressively, frustrating the Porcupine Warriors throughout the encounter.

The visitors took the lead in the 69th minute through Darlvin Yeboah, who finished off a well-worked move that caught the Kotoko defence off guard and silenced the home supporters. That goal turned the game on its head and forced Kotoko into a desperate search for an equaliser.

Their persistence eventually paid off late in the match when they were awarded a controversial penalty. Despite protests from the visitors, Albert Amoah calmly converted from the spot to level the score and rescue a point for the hosts.

While the result extends Kotoko’s unbeaten streak to seven games, the mood after the final whistle was one of disappointment. Head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum and his players were visibly frustrated, aware that they had missed a key opportunity to stay ahead in the title race—especially with GoldStars edging Young Apostles 1-0 to move level on points.

Bechem United, who came into the game after two straight defeats, delivered a disciplined and organised performance. Their solid defending and swift counter-attacks nearly earned them all three points, and they will take heart from their strong showing.

As Kotoko now prepare for a tough away fixture against Accra Lions, they know any further slip-ups could be costly. Meanwhile, Bechem United face GoldStars in a crucial clash that could further shape the title race.
