Asante Kotoko’s difficult season took another blow on Sunday as they were defeated 1-0 by Bechem United at Nana Gyeabour Park. This marks their fourth consecutive loss, with previous defeats to Legon Cities and Heart of Lions, leaving them in sixth place in the Ghana Premier League standings, now trailing their rivals, Hearts of Oak.
Bechem United’s sole goal came in the 27th minute, when Kofi Tompuo scored with a stunning long-range shot. After controlling a pass, Tompuo launched a powerful strike from distance that left Kotoko goalkeeper Mohamed Camara helpless. The goal, Bechem’s first shot on target, sealed their victory and continued their strong home record against Kotoko, remaining unbeaten at Nana Gyeabour Park since 2016.
Despite Kotoko having more attempts on goal, with nine shots compared to Bechem’s seven, they struggled to create meaningful scoring chances. Bechem edged possession, holding 51% to Kotoko’s 49%, and defended resolutely to deny Kotoko any clear opportunities. The visitors failed to record a single shot on target, underscoring their ongoing offensive struggles.
The defeat piles more pressure on Kotoko’s head coach, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, who has cited player fatigue as a key reason for their poor form. With a crucial local derby against Nations FC on the horizon, Dr. Ogum’s position may be under scrutiny if the team’s form doesn’t improve.
For Bechem United, the win takes them to ninth place, and they will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming match against Berekum Chelsea. Meanwhile, Kotoko must regroup quickly if they hope to turn their season around and stay in the title race.
