Ghanaians are mounting pressure on the Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept defeat in the 2020 presidential elections.

Former president John Mahama, according to official figures from the Electoral Commission, lost to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the just ended elections.

President Akufo-Addo was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential elections on Wednesday, 9 December.

Akufo-Addo of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) polled 6,730,413 votes representing 51.59% of the total votes cast as against John Mahama’s 6,214,889 votes representing 47.36. Total valid votes after the close of poll was 13, 434, 574.

Unwilling to accept results

However, Mahama announced on Thursday evening that he will not accept the results of the 2020 elections, declaring it was a “stolen change”.

Speaking at a press conference at the headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama said “it was clear that the NDC won the presidential and parliamentary elections” but the Electoral Commission rigged.

He promised to use “legitimate means” available to challenge the results, serving notice that “I’m unwilling to accept the verdict of a flawed election.”

He added: “The sacred verdict of the people must be protected. It has been my pledge throughout my service to do exactly that. No amount of trickery will erase the verdict of the people.”

Ghanaians have taken to social media under the hashtag #MahamaDoTheRightThing to mount pressure on Mahama to concede to defeat. Below are a few comments and the artworks on social media to mount pressure on Mahama to concede:
