John Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has shared his concern, stating that Ghanaians will face ongoing challenges as long as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds power.

Mahama criticized the current NPP government, alleging a lack of effective ideas and plans to enhance the lives of ordinary Ghanaians. Through a Facebook post on January 24, the former President urged citizens to avoid repeating mistakes from previous elections.

He underscored the NDC’s readiness to tackle the economic difficulties confronting the nation for the well-being of its people.

“Implementing VAT on electricity consumption will raise tariffs by almost 21%, intensifying hardships on Ghanaians and affecting prices of goods, services, and transport fares.”

“I support organized labor’s call for the government to reverse the decision on collecting VAT on electricity consumption.”

Mahama stressed, “The NDC is prepared to address Ghana’s economic challenges and provide significant relief to Ghanaians upon assuming office in January 2025.”

Mahama further called on the government to use caution in deploying the recently approved $600 million IMF bailout to alleviate economic struggles in Ghana.

The disbursement, sanctioned by the IMF Executive Board on January 19, 2024, followed Ghana’s successful completion of the 2023 Article IV consultation and the initial review of the 36-month Extended Credit Facility arrangement.

Expressing worry about the ongoing hardships, Mahama emphasized that the Akufo-Addo-led administration must ensure prudent use of the funds to bring relief to the suffering citizens.

Despite the first tranche released last year, Mahama argued that Ghanaians continue to face difficulties.

“Normally, the release of $600 million by the IMF to the Ghanaian government should ease the burden on the suffering citizens. However, it is evident that Ghanaians will keep suffering as long as Akufo-Addo-Bawumia and the NPP remain in office,” he added.
