Edward Adeti, a talented writer, reporter, and producer with Media Without Borders, has been awarded the prestigious title of 2023 P A V Ansah Journalist of the Year by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
The accolade was presented during a star-studded ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre on the night of 28 September, coinciding with the grand finale of the GJA’s 75th anniversary celebrations.
Adeti’s recognition comes in light of his impactful investigative work titled “Stealing from the Sick.”
This compelling piece delved into the alarming issue of drug shortages at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, exposing a syndicate whose actions potentially endangered lives within the community.
With this achievement, Edward Adeti has solidified his position among the finest journalists in the fourth estate, demonstrating the vital role of investigative journalism in holding entities accountable and highlighting critical issues affecting public health.
The GJA Awards ceremony celebrated not only his accomplishments but also the dedication and resilience of journalists in Ghana.
Present at the occasion was President Akufo-Addo who called on journalists to be vigilant in their reporting, urging them to avoid spreading misinformation that could jeopardize the integrity of the upcoming electoral process.
According to him, journalists are the gatekeepers of truth and must prioritise factual reporting over sensationalism.
“Every four years, Ghanaians go to the polls to choose their leaders, and in that process, the media plays an indispensable role. It’s through your work that citizens are informed about the policies of political parties, the integrity of candidates and the issues that matter most to their lives.”
“The responsibility of the media during elections cannot be overstated. You have been at the forefront, monitoring polls, reporting on potential irregularities, and ensuring that the voices of the electorates are heard. Peaceful transitions of power that we have been seeing in Ghana are no small parts due to the diligence and integrity of the media.”
However, he cautioned that with the rise of social media and the rapid dissemination of information, journalists face new challenges, such as disinformation and fake news, which can mislead the public.
