Ghana’s energy minister NAPO resigns to focus on running mate role

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially accepted the resignation of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister for Energy, effective July 18, 2024.

Opoku Prempeh, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, resigned to focus on his new role as the Vice-Presidential Candidate and Running Mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement issued by the Communications Directorate of the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo expressed his deep gratitude to Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his dedicated service to the government and the people of Ghana.

The President highlighted Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s notable achievements during his tenure as Minister for Education and subsequently as Minister for Energy, recognizing his significant contributions to both sectors.

Following Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s resignation, President Akufo-Addo has appointed Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and MP for Damongo, to oversee the Ministry of Energy’s affairs at the cabinet level.

Additionally, the President has designated Herbert Krapa, Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, to handle the day-to-day administration. Both appointees will collaborate closely with Dr. Opoku Prempeh to ensure a seamless transition.

President Akufo-Addo extended his best wishes and God’s blessings to Dr. Opoku Prempeh in his new role, expressing confidence that he will continue to serve the party and the nation with distinction.
