Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has emphasized the need for Ghana to have an honest and accountable leader. He contends that the country’s future is not determined by political manifestos.

In a post on his X platform, Braimah remarked, “The destiny of Ghana doesn’t depend on manifestos. We’ve seen the best of manifestos before. What we need is honest, accountable leadership. We need a leader who will want to be remembered by present and future generations for how well he/she served this country.”

Braimah’s comments follow the recent launch of manifestos by both major political parties. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presented its manifesto in Takoradi on August 18. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, promised to alleviate fiscal burdens by empowering the private sector and maintaining key social programs like free education and healthcare. He emphasized addressing the major concerns of Ghanaians, including the cost of living, unemployment, and infrastructure development.

On the other hand, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) unveiled its manifesto at the University of Education, Winneba, on August 24. John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, proposed exempting new small businesses from taxes for their first two years and reviewing regulations on salvaged vehicle imports. His plan also includes supporting local automotive industries, implementing a “Made in Ghana” agenda, and enhancing the role of the Ghana EXIM Bank in financing non-traditional exports.

Braimah’s call underscores his belief that effective leadership and integrity are crucial for Ghana’s progress, regardless of the specifics of political promises.
