Government renegotiates legacy debt with IPPs to secure energy sector stability

0

The government has successfully restructured the legacy debt owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), addressing a significant issue that had jeopardized their continued operations. This strategic move is intended to foster sustainability in the energy sector and help maintain a stable electricity supply.

Herbert Krapa, the Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, emphasized the positive impact of this debt renegotiation, stating that it positions Ghana for future success. He made these remarks during a visit to the Accra West Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), where he encouraged the power distributor to rebuild public trust by promptly resolving customer complaints related to meter acquisition and other service issues.

In a related update, ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama refuted allegations that the new smart meters being deployed are intended to exploit customers. These allegations arose after numerous complaints about the consumption rates associated with the smart meters being installed as part of the Loss Reduction Programme (LRP).

Mahama reassured customers that the purpose of the smart meters is to enhance accuracy and efficiency in energy consumption measurement, not to take advantage of consumers.
