The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has announced plans to install 25,000 solar-powered street lights across the region. This initiative follows numerous complaints from motorists and residents about poor nighttime visibility on local roads.
Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover shared the details during a regional town hall meeting, emphasizing that the new street lights are part of a broader strategy to enhance safety and reduce crime. “Because criminals don’t like visibility, the government has supported the region to ensure we light up the entire area with street lights,” he explained.
The installation will occur in phases. In the first phase, 10,000 street lights were installed in 2022, followed by 20,000 in 2023. The upcoming third phase will see the addition of 25,000 street lights.
A key component of the project includes a pilot program in which a company will collaborate with the Regional Coordinating Council to install solar lights on the Tema Motorway. This pilot will cover routes from Shiashie through the Airport to 37 and Accra Central. Subsequent phases will address areas such as the N1 highway to Weija Gbawe, Achimota, the Overhead, Forestry Commission, Achimota Police Station, GIMPA, and Fiesta Royale.
