The Ghana Standards Authority’s (GSA) Cosmetics Laboratory has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first in Africa to receive ISO accreditation for its testing methods.
This accreditation, supported by the European Union (EU) and the West Africa Competitiveness Programme (WACOMP) through the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), enhances the laboratory’s capabilities to test and certify cosmetic products produced in Ghana.
The accreditation, effective from November 13, 2023, positions GSA’s Cosmetics Laboratory as a leader in the continent, with the largest ISO accreditation scope for cosmetics test methods.
The accomplishment strengthens Ghana’s international recognition in the testing of regulated products in the cosmetics industry, enabling the laboratory to compete effectively with counterparts in Europe and Western countries.
Dr. Martin Adarkwah – Yiadom, Head of Drugs, Cosmetics, and Forensic Science Laboratory at GSA, expressed gratitude to the EU, UNIDO, and WACOMP for their continuous support, emphasizing the importance of standards in contributing to industry growth, protecting consumers, and facilitating trade.
Mrs. Ebe Muschialli, Project Manager of WACOMP-Ghana, highlighted the collaboration’s role in making Ghana’s products and services globally competitive and fostering intra-African trade.
