The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region has announced a temporary shutdown of the Barekese Water Treatment Plant. The shutdown will take place from Monday, March 17th, to Wednesday, March 19th, 2025.

This planned interruption is necessary to facilitate the installation of new interconnection pipelines and foot valves at the Suame roundabout, a move aimed at improving water supply across the Kumasi Metropolis and surrounding areas.

In a statement, GWL acknowledged the inconvenience this may cause to affected communities, including Offinso, Kumasi, and its environs. However, they assured residents that their team of engineers would work diligently to complete the upgrade within the scheduled time frame.

“This measure is in line with GWL’s commitment to enhance the water supply capacity from the Barekese Water Treatment Plant to improve water service delivery and address the supply challenges in the metropolis,” the statement read.

GWL has also advised essential service providers, particularly hospitals and schools, to ensure they have sufficient water storage to sustain them throughout the shutdown period.

Expressing regret for the inconvenience, the Management of GWL urged consumers to remain patient, emphasizing that the project is crucial for improving overall water service delivery in the region.
