Former Foreign Affairs Minister of Ghana, Hannah Tetteh, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize a complete overhaul of the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of his governance reform agenda.
During a press interaction on Tuesday, December 24, the former Awutu Senya West legislator voiced serious concerns about the EC’s operations, stressing the pressing need for reforms to restore public trust in the institution.
Tetteh’s appeal aligns with growing calls from various stakeholders for measures to enhance the EC’s independence and accountability, which are deemed crucial for credible elections.
She emphasized that addressing these issues should be integral to the incoming administration’s broader strategy to improve governance and resolve systemic challenges.
“The way they have operated has not inspired confidence in their impartiality or objectivity,” she noted. “I believe one key takeaway for the commission after this election should be the need for its own reset. Without that, I am concerned about how the public will perceive the EC’s neutrality and competence in future elections.”
She further stressed the importance of a thorough review of the commission’s approach, saying, “There must be a significant re-evaluation of their processes to rebuild public confidence, which is currently at an all-time low.”
Hannah Tetteh’s remarks underline the urgent need for the Electoral Commission to take decisive steps toward reform to safeguard its credibility and integrity moving forward.
