Health Minister Dr. Okoe Boye secures international role on Gavi Alliance Board

Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, Ghana’s Health Minister, has been appointed as the Alternate Board Member for the Anglophone Africa constituency on the Gavi Alliance Board. This prestigious role will see him serving until December 31, 2026.

 

The appointment process began with a nomination letter dated September 11, 2024, seeking to replace the current representative, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu. The Anglophone Africa constituency was given until 18:00 CET on September 20, 2024, to raise any objections to the nomination. However, according to the official letter, no objections were made, allowing the process to proceed.

 

The next step in the process involves submitting the nomination to the Gavi Alliance Governance Committee for review. If approved, Dr. Okoe Boye’s appointment will take effect immediately.

 

Dr. Okoe Boye brings significant expertise to the board. As Ghana’s Minister of Health, he has played a pivotal role in leading health reforms to enhance the country’s healthcare system. Prior to this, he was the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), where he oversaw the expansion of the insurance scheme to cover critical conditions, including childhood cancers. He also served as the Board Chairman of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, implementing reforms that improved the hospital’s operations and patient care standards.

 

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Okoe Boye was a key figure in Ghana’s response, particularly in the nationwide vaccination campaign, which helped control the virus’s spread. His efforts were widely recognized, leading to the publication of his book, *”Fellow Ghanaians: Telling Ghana’s COVID-19 Story, A Journey of Fear, Facts, Faith and Fortune.”*

 

His new role on the Gavi Alliance Board will strengthen Anglophone Africa’s representation in the global health partnership, which focuses on improving access to vaccines in low-income countries. Dr. Okoe Boye’s experience and leadership will offer valuable insights into the region’s unique health challenges and opportunities, furthering the board’s mission to save lives and enhance global immunization efforts. His appointment also reflects Ghana’s ongoing commitment to global health governance.
