Security has been beefed up at the City Escape Hotel at Dawhenya after some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) besieged the facility Saturday.
The party suspects that a meeting, which is being held at the venue by the Electoral Commission (EC) is a clear breach of a court order.
NDC MP for Ningo/Prampram, Sam George, on Friday secured an injunction restraining the EC from holding the meeting at the City Escape Hotel.
The injunction is in place from April 24, 2020, to April 27, 2020.
Though there are several government-registered vehicles in the premises of the Hotel, it is unclear if the said workshop is ongoing. Security operatives are currently at the hotel premises as the NDC says it has officially reported the development to the police for investigation.
Notable party members including Ningo/Prampram legislator Sam George, Parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo and the party’s Deputy General Secretary Peter Boamah Otokunor, were spotted at the hotel premises.
“We didn’t even need a court order to stop what the Electoral Commission is doing; the directive of the President and the Emergency Restriction Law that has been passed clearly guide the police on what should be enforced, so we expected that the police to enforce that.
“When we came and saw them having the meeting we reported the matter to the police station and the commander who is supposed to enforce the law has switched his phone off and he is nowhere to be found; we expect the police to act”, Mr Otokunor told reporters, adding that “the police is protecting the Electoral Commission and so the citizens must enforce the law.”
The EC was planning to hold a national planning meeting and a training workshop to prepare and plan for the upcoming voter registration exercise.
The programmes were scheduled to take place from Apri 24, 2020, to April 29, 2020, at the City Escape Hotel. The meeting was to be held in three different batches in order to observe the social distancing protocols amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus in Ghana.
The plans for new register are currently on suspension because of the coronavirus pandemic. The voters registration exercises was initially scheduled to begin on April 18.
Following the suspension, the EC had said it is collaborating with health experts to decide on a more favourable date depending on the prevalence rate of the virus.
