The High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region, has found Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn into office.

Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that Kumi had willfully disregarded the court’s directive by taking the oath of office despite a pending legal dispute. As a result, the judge issued a bench warrant for the MP’s arrest after he failed to appear for sentencing.

The court had previously ordered Kumi not to present himself for swearing-in until the dispute was resolved. However, he proceeded to assume office in Parliament, prompting the court to take action. “Overwhelming evidence” of defiance led to the ruling, affirming that his actions were in contempt of court.

An attempt by the Minority Caucus in Parliament to justify his absence from the hearing through an official letter was dismissed by Justice Amedahe, who insisted that Kumi had disregarded the court’s authority.

With the bench warrant now in place, authorities are expected to ensure his arrest and compliance with the court’s decision.
