IMANI Africa President, Franklin Cudjoe, has commended Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, for his professionalism and dedication to public service, despite the challenges he has faced.

Reflecting on Napo’s career, Cudjoe highlighted several key moments where Napo demonstrated his commitment to public service.

Cudjoe recalled Napo’s tenure as the ranking member of the health committee in Parliament under the late President Atta Mills. He praised Napo’s handling of critical issues, particularly during the passage of the public health bill.

“I admired his professionalism when he was the ranking member of the health committee. I had been invited to appear before the health committee meeting, he was chairing to testify on certain aspects of the public health bill that was inimical to civil liberties. Eventually, the bill was passed,” Cudjoe remarked.

He also lauded Napo’s efforts as the first Education Minister under President Akufo-Addo, where he was tasked with implementing the Free SHS policy.

Despite the lack of a guiding policy paper and the inherent challenges, Napo pushed through with the implementation. Cudjoe was part of a small group invited by Napo to discuss the rollout of the Free SHS program.

“It was a difficult conversation especially when there was no policy paper to guide the implementation of the programme. But he pushed through the implementation amidst the imperfections. The challenges though have come full circle,” Cudjoe said.
