Manchester City academy graduate Jeremie Frimpong, who has risen through the ranks in the Netherlands, is currently a subject of speculation regarding a possible switch in nationality, despite his extensive history with Dutch youth teams.
The right-back, who played for the Dutch at U19, U20, and U21 levels, recently earned his senior debut in a 2024 Euro qualifier against France in October.
Reflecting on his international journey, the 22-year-old expressed joy at making his senior debut for the Netherlands. “It was nice to finally make my debut. It was against France as well, so it was a nice game. I was really happy about it,” he conveyed in an interview with Joy Sports.
Despite his allegiance to the Netherlands, Frimpong revealed that he was approached by the technical handlers of the Black Stars, the Ghanaian national team, for a possible nationality switch. Confirming the conversation, he stated, “Yes, the coach called me. I had a conversation with him, but my mind was already made up.”
When queried about whether he occasionally watches Ghana’s games, Frimpong firmly stated, “No, I just focus on the Netherlands,” underlining his commitment to the Dutch national team.
Born to Ghanaian and Dutch parents, Frimpong has consistently expressed his preference for representing the Netherlands. In a 2021 interview with De Telegraaf, he stated unequivocally, “I was born in the Netherlands, so for me it’s simple: I want to play for Orange (Dutch national team).”
Having joined Manchester City’s academy at the age of nine and spending nearly a decade there, Frimpong made a significant move to Scottish giants Celtic in 2019.
His journey continued with a transfer to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, where he has showcased his versatility with six goals and seven assists in all competitions this season.
