Former Ghana and Chelsea star midfielder Michael Essien says Paul Scholes, a former Manchester United and England midfielder, as the toughest player he’s ever played against in his career.

Essien, who joined Chelsea in 2005 from Olympique Lyon until the 2013/2014 season faced a lot of quality and big star midfielders both in the UEFA Champions League and English Premier League but has singled out the former Red Devil as his toughest opponent.

In an interview with Goal Africa, Essien expressed his respect, stating, “The best player I have ever faced, I mean I have faced a lot of good players in my career. I mean it’s difficult to tell.

“I faced the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and a lot of them and Steven Gerrard. But I always say Paul Scholes is one of the players that was quite tough.”

Essien won many titles including the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Community Shield, and the Football League Cup.
