A former Member of Parliament for Ejisu in the Ashanti Region appears to admit that delegates who form the electoral college in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) do not elect dedicated, loyal, tried, and tested individuals who can lead the party but are interested in selling their votes to the highest bidder.
In a TV interview widely shared online, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi justified his position as he revealed how he induced delegates with ¢5,000 during the party’s 2020 parliamentary primaries but still lost the election to his strongest opponent.
“I paid a lot of money”, Aduomi is heard in the tape as saying. “I paid ¢5,000 to about 600 delegates but I lost the election”.
“Let me tell you this, politics is very expensive and that’s how huge an amount I paid just for people to endorse my candidature. It’s a game for the brave”, the former Deputy Roads and Highways Minister said.
Mr. Aduomi suffered a yawning defeat during the 2020 NPP primaries in the Ejisu Constituency when he lost to Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, a current Deputy Finance Minister.
While lacing his boots to contest as Ashanti Regional Chairman for the governing party ahead of a congress later this year, his latest comments have been widely condemned by some top individuals within the government, dailymailgh.com has gathered.
Potential political corruption including, but not limited to, vote buying, abuse of office for personal gains, electoral impropriety are in contravention of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana; and NPP’s own voting regulations.
It appears Mr. Aduomi may have breached these regulations and risks being sanctioned.
