A court in Ghana’s capital, Accra has remanded into police custody, the landlord who shot and killed his tenant over rent issues last Sunday.
The suspect, Victor Steve Nana Kankam, has been provisionally charged with murder, the Abeka District Court heard on Tuesday.
His plea was, however, not taken as prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Ahiafle, prayed the court for adjournment.
Nana Kankam said he shot his tenant in self-defence.
“Although I am not supposed to talk to you without legal representation, all I can say is that I shot him [tenant] in self-defence,” he was quoted by Accra-based Joy News.
The court consequently granted the request and adjourned the case to June 8, 2020 pending further investigations. Nana Kankam has been referred to health officials for Covid-19 screening.
He allegedly shot to death his tenant Benjamin Okyere over his failure to vacate a two-bedroom house located at Spot M at Ofankor in Accra.
According to police, the deceased, popularly known as Trillionaire, was brought to the police station unconscious by some persons around 1:45 pm.
He was subsequently rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.
Two pump action guns loaded with ammunition were retrieved from the suspect’s house.
