The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has initiated a major reshuffle of police commanders stationed in areas heavily affected by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. This forms part of a renewed effort by the Ghana Police Service to strengthen its operations against the harmful activity.

The reshuffle targets mainly Divisional and District Commanders in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North Regions. According to the police, this is only the beginning of a wider campaign to bring fresh energy and accountability to the fight.

“This reshuffle is part of a broader effort to ensure more effective policing in areas plagued by illegal mining,” the police noted in a statement, adding that more changes will be made in the coming weeks.

The official statement titled “Police Reshuffle Commanders in Galamsey Areas as It Intensifies Its War on Illegal Mining Activities” confirmed the IGP’s commitment to tackling galamsey head-on. “The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in keeping with his promise to wage a relentless war on illegal mining activities (galamsey), has reshuffled Police commanders in galamsey-prone areas,” the statement read.

The reshuffle is expected to be the first of many steps to boost policing efforts in areas affected by illegal mining.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has made a major breakthrough in its anti-galamsey operations. A four-day intelligence-led operation, which began on April 17, 2025, around Samreboi in the Western Region, led to the arrest of 47 suspects. These individuals were reportedly engaging in illegal mining along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests.

Among the suspects arrested are 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals, including four women.

The operation also led to the seizure of several items, including:
