The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has embarked on her inaugural official visit to Ghana, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the IMF and the West African nation.

During her visit, Georgieva is scheduled to conduct a series of high-level meetings with key government officials, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, and Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.

These discussions will focus on charting the course for Ghana’s economic trajectory within the framework of the three-year US$ 3 billion extended credit facility with the IMF.

Accompanying Georgieva are esteemed members of the IMF delegation, including Mission Chief for Ghana, Stephane Roudet, and Director of the Africa Department, Abebe Selassie, underscoring the importance of this visit in shaping the future of Ghana’s economic landscape.

A pivotal event during the visit is the conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) scheduled for Monday, March 18, 2024, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.

Themed “AI as a catalyst to transform economies in sub-Saharan Africa,” the conference aims to explore innovative solutions to drive economic growth and development in the region.

Ghana’s performance under the IMF program has garnered commendation, with reforms yielding positive outcomes and signs of economic stabilization emerging.

The successful implementation of policies to address previous imbalances has been acknowledged, paving the way for continued support from international creditors.

Looking ahead, Ghana’s next IMF program review is slated for June 2024, with anticipation for the disbursement of the third tranche of approximately US$ 360 million.

This underscores the ongoing commitment of both Ghana and the IMF to foster sustainable economic progress and prosperity.
