As the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaches, former Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu is urging Chris Hughton, the current coach, to instill a robust sense of discipline within the team. Konadu, now the head coach of Nsoatreman FC, believes that fostering discipline is crucial for the team’s success in the tournament hosted in Ivory Coast.
Konadu emphasizes the weariness among Ghanaians concerning players disregarding rules and regulations within the camp. He envisions the team operating seamlessly, akin to a well-oiled machine, where everyone adheres to instructions and follows rules without exception.
“Chris Hughton has to stamp his authority on the team whether he likes it or not,” Konadu asserts. “Ghanaians are becoming fed up with players doing what they want in camp. We want to see a team like it’s from the army barracks that will listen to instructions; do this or don’t do that.”
These remarks from Konadu coincide with the Black Stars’ preparations for the AFCON tournament set to kick off on January 13, 2024. The team is currently based in Kumasi, engaging in intensive training ahead of their group stage campaign.
Ghana’s opening match in the AFCON journey is against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, followed by encounters with Egypt and Mozambique. The team’s focus lies on discipline and teamwork, with the ultimate goal of making a positive impact in the tournament and securing the coveted trophy for the first time since 1982.
