Africa’s economic future is at a crossroads, and intra-Africa trade is being touted as the solution to unlocking billions of dollars in economic potential.

According to Dr. G.A Pele, a banker and lecturer, if properly harnessed, intra-Africa trade can render International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans unnecessary.

Speaking on The African Future Series on Wake Up Africa morning show on Dominion TV with Korku Lumor, the panel discussed some of the continent’s major challenges, including trade barriers.

Dr. Pele highlighted the need for open borders to facilitate easier access for African traders and stressed that African governments must tap into the billions of dollars in intra-continental commerce.

Dr. Pele stated, “We tend to overlook the importance of intra-trade within the continent itself. I believe there are billions of dollars right within the intra-African trade that we would not need IMF or World Bank to take the individual African countries out of whatever woes it finds itself. Let’s set up a blueprint and follow that blueprint, and indeed the sky becomes the limit for Africa.”

Additionally, the author criticized the media’s excessive focus on negative news about Africa, arguing that corruption and other crises exist in the Western world but are not given the same level of publicity.

Dr Pele added, “I’m not comfortable with the assertion of Africa being predominantly corrupt and even with the electoral challenges we have. They are worse off in the Western environment. The challenge is the publication of what is on the negative connotation rather than what is on the bright side.”
