Isaac Adongo, a Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, has criticized the idea of a debate between National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Adongo argues that such a debate would not help Bawumia, who he describes as having a failing career plagued by perceived dishonesty and incompetence.
This response follows Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s challenge to Mahama for a debate with Bawumia, suggesting it could be an opportunity for Mahama to highlight the government’s shortcomings.
In an interview with Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Adongo contended that Bawumia’s failure as Vice President and his alleged dishonesty undermine his credibility. He questioned why President Akufo-Addo avoided debating Mahama in 2020, implying that it was either due to lack of preparation or fear of being exposed.
Adongo urged Bawumia to address the press directly, as Mahama has done, rather than using a debate to attempt to revive his career. He said, “In 2020, was it because Akufo-Addo was clueless, or was it because Akufo-Addo was insulting? Why wasn’t Akufo-Addo prepared to meet John Mahama in a debate in 2020? And now you are calling for a debate after you’ve messed up your career, wanting to use John Mahama to resurrect your career, not because you’re going to say anything, but because you’re going to lie.”
He added, “If you know that you are better and you have done well, John Mahama met the press, even as an opposition leader. Why are you not meeting the press? Let them put the questions to you, go and account to the press.”
