Veteran Ghanaian rapper Kwame Nsiah-Apau, popularly known in showbiz as Okyeame Kwame says Ghanaians must desist from abusing the rights of the LGBTQ+ community as they are also Ghanaians and are protected by the constitution as any ordinary citizen.
The vastly experienced musician says it is absolutely wrong to physically and verbally abuse the members of LGBTQ+ especially, those who engages in the dissemination of videos and photos capturing private moments of LGBTQ+ individuals.
“I think that it’s completely wrong to beat LGBTQ people because you find two men kissing somewhere and you take cameras and video them, and put them on social media for shaming,” the artist said.
He shared his opinion on this on Asaase 99.5 when he appeared as a guest on Thursday, June, 15, 2023.
Okyeame Kwame believes the nation would have to engage in a dialogue and make a collective decision on accepting LGBTQ+ rights as part of Ghanaian culture.
He stressed that resorting to violence is never an acceptable response, whether it is towards LGBTQ+ individuals or any other group.
“But the issue of whether it should be accepted into our culture or not, I think the nation must decide,” Okyeame Kwame told the show host. “But it is completely wrong to beat a dog, cow, your child, a thief, LGBTQ … it is violence.
“Based on my concept of love, I see that they [LGBTQ people] are suffering a lot and we should cut them slack when it comes to those silly things we do to them,” he said.
