“It’s been 12 years of hunger, hardship and vision-less leadership”: The words of Dr Kwabena Duffour II, son of National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer hopeful Dr Kwabena Duffour, as he contests the NDC parliamentary slot in the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency of the Ashanti Region.

In what appears to be a family race, Dr Kwabena Duffour II is challenging his father’s brother and incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, Alex Adomako (MP).

He picked the number 2 slot, after successfully going through a vetting process at the NDC Regional Secretariat on Monday (1 May).

No business-as-usual MP

Speaking with journalists Duffour said he was motivated by the calls by delegates and the people to represent them in Parliament.

“The [vetting] was very smooth. I am number 2 on the ballot and it is a divine selection”, Duffour II said.

“Sekyere Afram Plains needs an MP who can mobilize resources and make things move The constituency needs a businessman who can take risks…The constituency is so far behind that you don’t need a business-as-usual MP”, he added.

I’m not alien

“They say I am alien; I was there since 2012…We have a teak plantation and factory at Sekyere Afram Plains, and we have employed delegates and constituents. How can I be an alien? he quizzed.

“There were people who never campaigned during the 2020 election. They never campaigned in the constituency, but their names have been found in the register, but we leave that to God”, he further alleged.

NDC Primary

The opposition party will select presidential and parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2024 polls. The parliamentary primary has however been suspended in 15 constituencies including the Adansi Asokwa, Manhyia South and Mampong in the Ashanti Region.
