Ghana’s captain, Andre Ayew, expresses his longstanding desire to bring the Africa Cup of Nations title home, a dream he has nurtured since his inaugural tournament in 2008.
Despite featuring in his eighth tournament, he remains unfulfilled, having secured the runner-up position in 2010 and 2015.
In anticipation of the opening match against Cape Verde at the 2023 AFCON, the 34-year-old, hailing from Le Havre, passionately conveys his eagerness to clinch the coveted title.
Ayew reflects on his journey, stating, “Since I started from day one in 2008, I have always had the ambition to make sure that we are able to bring the trophy home one day. We always come with that ambition but we can’t promise it.”
Acknowledging the unpredictability of the tournament, Ayew emphasizes the team’s commitment to giving their all. He notes, “What we can do is to make sure we give everything that we can day by day, game by game, take our time. We have seen a lot of teams win this tournament without any dogs’ chance and we have seen teams who were expected to win and indeed they won.”
Tonight, the Black Stars commence their campaign against Cape Verde at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, with kick-off scheduled for 8 pm.
