The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has won the 2024 general election with 6,328,397 representing 56.55% of all valid votes cast, the Electoral Commission has announced.

The current vice-president and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61% of all valid votes cast to place second in the contest.

Announcing the final results at press conference on Monday (9 December), the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa said the results were compiled from 267 constituencies, with nine constituencies yet to be accounted for due to outstanding issues.

According to Mensa, the results from the nine remaining constituencies, which amount to just over 400,000 votes, would not alter the overall outcome of the election when added to the already collated figures.

The total number of valid votes stood at 11,191,422, with 239,109 ballots rejected. In total, 11,430,531 votes were cast, representing a voter turnout of 60.9% based on the 267 constituencies counted.

Earlier, the presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had called his opponent, John Mahama to concede defeat.

Bawumia announced his decision ahead of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) official declaration, aiming to calm tensions and uphold the nation’s peace.

“I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of two things: Ghana will win and peace will reign,” he said, his tone both reflective and resolute. The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time and we respect that decision with all humility,” Bawumia said.
