The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, has officially inaugurated a 7,000-seater stadium in Hohoe, Volta Region, marking a significant milestone in the region’s sports infrastructure development. The stadium, designed to nurture local talent, reflects the region’s rich history of producing world-class athletes who have proudly represented Ghana internationally.
Mr. Amewu shared that the idea for the stadium began in 2005 when he was the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive under the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. He noted that although the original plan was to use 120,000 solid concrete blocks for a hotel, he decided to repurpose them for the stadium, understanding the long-term benefits it would bring to the entire constituency. “A very good friend gave me about 120,000 solid concrete blocks with the initial intention to build a hotel. But I decided these blocks would serve a better purpose here in Hohoe, so I transported them with several trailers and began construction,” he explained.
The project, which stalled after his tenure ended in 2008, was revived in 2016 following the return of the New Patriotic Party to power. Mr. Amewu expressed gratitude to the community, traditional leaders, and private individuals whose support was crucial in overcoming challenges like land acquisition and funding. He specifically acknowledged Togbe Adzema and the late Gbi Paramount Chief, Togbega Gabusu, for their significant roles in the project’s success. “The chiefs, landowners, and sports enthusiasts of Hohoe deserve the credit. This stadium is a collective effort inspired by their passion for sports,” he stated.
The stadium is expected to play a key role in developing local athletes, some of whom have already attracted the attention of national and international scouts. “Currently, one of our boys has been called to the national team, and we’re in the process of sending two others to Poland. My dream is to see 11 players from Hohoe in the Black Stars someday,” Mr. Amewu revealed.
With a seating capacity of 7,000 and the ability to host up to 10,000 spectators with standing room, the stadium is about 90% complete. Mr. Amewu assured the public that the VIP stand is the final part under construction and that full completion is expected by the first quarter of next year. He concluded the event by praising the unity and vision behind the project, saying, “Today, we are all witnessing something magnificent. The motivation to do this came from the people of Hohoe, and I say a big thank you to everyone involved.”
