The Ashanti Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 21-year-old Daniel Tuffuor, a final-year student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in connection with the tragic death of Miss Joana Deladem Yabani.

Miss Yabani, also a final-year Biological Sciences student, was found dead near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre at around 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025. The university’s security services discovered her lifeless body and reported the incident to the police.

According to Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, Tuffuor was identified through campus CCTV footage, which played a crucial role in his apprehension.

“We have identified the suspect through CCTV footage on the KNUST campus, and he is currently assisting us with our investigations,” DCOP Cudjoe confirmed.

In response to the incident, the police have increased security on the university campus, introducing round-the-clock patrols and surveillance measures.

“We are stepping up our efforts to maintain security on campus. Our officers will be conducting round-the-clock patrols and monitoring activities,” DCOP Cudjoe added.

KNUST also addressed the matter in a statement issued on Thursday, February 27, 2025. The university assured students and staff of their safety while expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Miss Yabani.

Additionally, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, personally reached out to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, to assure her of enhanced security on campus.

“Waking up to such horrible news was truly saddening, and losing a student in this manner is heartbreaking, especially for parents. We are grateful to the IGP for his swift intervention and the measures that have been put in place,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
