The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s largest referral medical facility, has confirmed that its temporary suspension of accepting dead bodies and Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases at its morgue is being strictly observed.
This directive, which took effect on Monday, February 3, was introduced to allow for a major renovation of the hospital’s mortuary facilities. The refurbishment, expected to last six weeks, is part of efforts to enhance service quality and address longstanding infrastructural challenges.
Full Compliance with Directive
Speaking to Citi News, the hospital’s Public Relations Unit emphasized that both staff and the public have fully complied with the directive, allowing the renovation to proceed without disruption.
The hospital administration stressed that this cooperation is essential to ensuring the project is completed on schedule and without complications.
Reasons for the Suspension
The decision to temporarily stop receiving bodies was driven by the deteriorating condition of the mortuary. Over the years, the facility has faced capacity constraints and infrastructure problems, necessitating urgent upgrades.
According to hospital officials, the renovation will include a complete overhaul of critical areas such as:
Refrigeration systems to ensure proper preservation
Storage compartments for better organization
Ventilation improvements to maintain hygienic conditions
Addressing Maintenance Challenges
A senior hospital official, who spoke anonymously, revealed that the mortuary’s cooling systems had been experiencing frequent malfunctions, raising concerns about their ability to maintain optimal temperatures for preserving bodies.
“Given these challenges, management saw it as imperative to take decisive action by suspending operations and embarking on the much-needed refurbishment,” the official stated.
