A circuit court at Old Tafo in Kumasi has sentenced a 30-year-old electrician apprentice to 10 years imprisonment for defiling a 15-year-old girl.
Evans Osei Amaniampong was convicted on Thursday (18 January), after he was arrested, charged for defilement contrary to Section 101 (2) of the Criminal Offenses Act, (ACT 29) of 1960.
State prosecutor Detective Inspector S. K. Oppong told the court presided over by Festus F Nukunu (Esq), that the complainant Abena Adoma is a petty trader and biological mother of the victim (name withheld) who lives in the same neighbourhood as the accused person at Ntonso in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
He said that on the 13th of January, the victim’s mum attended her niece’s wedding in Mampong and left the victim under the care of her sick sister identified only as Happy.
The victim who confided in another neighbour narrated that on that fateful day at about noon, the victim reluctantly followed the convict on the orders of her Auntie to get her an ointment.
The court heard that the convict after giving the ointment to the victim suddenly locked his door, detained her in the room, gave her five cedis as a Christmas gift and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
Amaniampong, after hearing the footsteps of someone entering the house, hurriedly stopped the act and amid threats opened the door for the victim to leave the room.
He was however arrested after the victim confirmed the incident to her mother who later reported the matter to the police. A medical report was issued for examination and an official confirmed that act.
The convict was consequently put before the court for prosecution.
