A fierce fire has gutted portions of a nine-bedroom house, killing a mother and her two children on Sunday, officials say.

The father was the only survivor of the blaze that engulfed the apartment located at Asuoyeboa North in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

He was taken to a hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.

Firefighters later discovered the charred remains of the victims in the debris after battling the blaze. The cause of the fire is being investigated, according to Spokesperson of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Ashanti Region, DO III Peter Osei Addai.

They reportedly got trapped in the inferno as keys to exit points in the building were not readily found.

“When our team got to the scene we saw that the fire was well alight and so we called for reinforcement to extinguish the fire. In the process, they saw three bodies that had been burnt by the fire. Their bodies have been retrieved and handed over to the police to be conveyed to the hospital”, Addai told dailymailgh.com on Monday.

“There are reports that the fire started from the hall which also stores mattresses and later spread to other rooms but investigations have started to ascertain the cause of this latest incident”, he added.

The names of the victims were given as Madam Felicia Owusu, 45, Obed Owusu 11, and 9-year-old Christabel Owusu.

Their charred remains have been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for autopsy, it is gathered.
