Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead by the police in Kumasi.
The two were hit in a crossfire with the police in the early hours of Wednesday, December 30.
Ashanti Regional Spokesperson of the Ghana Police, ASP Godwin Ahianyo confirmed the incident at a press briefing.
He said the armed gang were terrorizing residents of Santasi Kajasi, Oteng Nkwanta and its environs during a robbery operation prompting police action.
“The Police Information Room and Command Center received a number of distress calls on the robbery and dispatched Police Patrol Team within the area to the scene. The team upon seeing the police opened fire leaving two of the suspected robbers between the ages of 20 and 30years dead”, ASP Ahianyo explained.
On the spot search at the scene revealed two weapons: one foreign pistol loaded with three ammunition, one revolver with three spent ammunition, two big backpacks containing three laptops, twenty-four (24) assorted mobile phones, two machetes and a cash sum of three thousand five hundred cedis (¢3,500).
ASP/Mr Ahianyo said efforts are underway to arrest the two other suspects who bolted after sustaining gunshot wounds.
“The command is appealing to all medical facilities in the region and elsewhere to be on the lookout for anyone who visits their facilities with suspected gunshot wounds to report same to the nearest police station”, he stated.
Bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for identification and autopsy, the police said.
