Police at Ahwiaa in the Ashanti region have arrested one person for his involvement in fresh communal clashes that left three persons injured.
The yet-to-be identified suspect who was arrested Sunday is currently in custody at the Ahwiaa Police Station in the Kwabre East Municipality.
Assembly member for Ahwiaa Ebuom electoral area, Kwaku Afrifa Tawiah who confirmed the incident to Dailymailgh.com said two separate attacks which happened over the weekend, have worsened the security situation within the enclave.
He recounted how residents including food vendors had to flee for their lives as the armed gang attacked anybody they sighted.
“The information is that four armed gang stormed a food joint and they attacked the vendors as they made away with their unspecified amounts. The cutlass-wielding men also attacked three young men who are receiving treatment at the hospital.
“One of the suspects was arrested by some opinion leaders at Zongoline and was handed over to the police. We are yet to meet the police – the Ashanti Regional Police Commander on Monday over the matter but for now the place is calm”, Tawiah told our correspondent in the Ashanti region. Meanwhile, the injured persons are receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the Mamponteng Government Hospital.
Police have since intensified patrols in the popular tourism community to forestall any eventuality.
Last month, one person was confirmed dead in renewed clashes between two youth groups in the area. Five persons were arrested.
