Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections to low voter turnout among its supporters. He shared these insights during an appearance on Newsfile on Saturday, December 14.
“One of the key reasons this result is as it is, according to the data, is that our people didn’t turn out to vote, and that is the fact,” he explained.
Aboagye highlighted significant drops in voter numbers for the NPP across key regions compared to the 2020 elections. “In 2020, the NPP had 145,000 votes in the Ahafo region; in 2024, we had 113,000. The NDC had 116,000 in 2020 and 130,000 in 2024. In Greater Accra, the NPP had 1,253,179 votes in 2020, and the NDC had 1,326,489. But in 2024, the NPP had only 681,000, which is half of what we achieved in 2020,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, Alhassan Suhuyini, Member of Parliament for Tamale North, attributed the NPP’s defeat to dissatisfaction with their governance, which he said angered many Ghanaians. Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One News the same day, Suhuyini criticized the NPP’s leadership style and urged the newly elected National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to reflect on the responsibility given to them.
“It is a victory that requires reflection. The funfair should be over by now. We need to understand the level of responsibility that has been placed on His Excellency the President’s shoulders and by extension the shoulders of the NDC. The margin of victory should not let us lose sight of the fact that expectation is also that high,” Suhuyini cautioned.
He argued that the NPP’s poor performance in government contributed significantly to the NDC’s success. “Yes, the NPP was abysmal in government. Their style of leadership in many instances provoked people, and I am sure it is that provocation that has manifested in the endorsement that the NDC got,” he added.
Both commentators underscored the importance of accountability, with Aboagye calling for introspection within the NPP and Suhuyini emphasizing the need for the NDC to meet the high expectations of the electorate.
