Mahama backs Alban Bagbin for speaker of the 9th parliament

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has instructed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Leadership to nominate The Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

This decision, announced on Sunday, January 5, 2025, through an official statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President-elect, comes after consultations with the NDC leadership. It highlights Bagbin’s exceptional service and contribution to Ghana’s Parliament.

Bagbin’s distinguished parliamentary career includes serving as the Member of Parliament for Nadwoli, holding roles as both Minority and Majority Leader, and his current position as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

In emphasizing his confidence in the nomination, the President-elect stated, “The Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s wealth of experience and leadership will undoubtedly enhance Parliament’s capacity to effectively oversee and advance Ghana’s democratic and legislative progress.”
