The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused former president John Mahama of being “desperate for power” hence his attempt to “cause tensions” ahead of the 2020 elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra Tuesday, the ruling party condemned Mahama’s recent meeting with diplomats over a by-election violence at Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

“Why is the former president desperate for power? Can that desperation be justified by peddling falsehoods about security in Ghana to the international community especially when the former president appears to be the inspiration for such violence with his own party,” communications director of the Elephant family Yaw Buabeng Asamoa said.

He said the meeting was part of Mahama’s agenda to portray a picture of insecurity in Ghana.

“It is a deliberate agenda to infuse a sense of political violence and fear in the country ahead of elections next year.

“This attempt to create fear of elections going as far as denigrating the country’s image on the international scene does not wash with voters in Ghana,” the lawmaker stressed.
