Former president John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be going to court on 30 December to petition against the results of Election 2020.
A member of the legal team of the Umbrella party, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, said all is set for the election petition hearing.
“We’ll go to court. We’ve made that clear. Certainly, by Wednesday, all these matters would be placed before the court,” Dafeamekpor revealed on Joy FM’s news analysis programme, Newsfile, on Saturday.
“We’re saying Electoral Commission should comply with the law. If you comply with the law and we emerge victorious that is fine. But you do not comply with the law and announce another candidate as the victor. No,” he added.
“Flawed polls”
Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the official results of the 2020 presidential election as “flawed and discredited.”
The Electoral Commission on Wednesday declared President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Adddo winner of the polls.
Akufo-Addo of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) polled 6,730,413 votes representing 51.59% of the total votes cast as against John Mahama’s 6,214,889 votes representing 47.36. Total valid votes after the close of poll was 13, 434, 574.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra after the polls, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, said the integrity of the election was compromised by the Electoral Commission with the help of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and state security.
“We’ve done extensive consultation and detailed analysis of the outcome of the elections as announced by Jean Mensa, Chair of the Electoral Commission and we’ve come to one conclusion that it’s a flawed, discredited elections and therefore we reject the presidential elections without any reservation as announced by her,” the MP for Tamale South told the press.
He added: “We also want to serve notice that the blatant effort even to deny us of a parliamentary majority will be fiercely resisted. We know that the good people of Ghana gave us a mandate and that mandate included a parliamentary majority and they have engaged in an attempt in connivance with the Electoral Commission to undermine the election through brute force with the military.”
